Bellingham’s Old School District Office May Be Transformed into a Cohousing Community
Bellingham Public Schools has signed a letter of intent to sell its former district office—originally built in 1908 as Roeder Elementary School, located at 1306 Dupont Street—to 4th Corner Commons, a group aiming to create a second cohousing community in the area.
The vision is to develop 35–45 homes (with one- to three-bedroom units), blending private residences with shared community spaces in an "intentional, collaborative neighborhood". The district anticipates closing the sale in 2026, with construction potentially beginning in spring 2027.
Three households have already committed, six more are set to join, and roughly ten others have expressed interest. The project will be designed collaboratively by future residents alongside established planners and developers such as Caddis Collaborative, Urban Development + Partners, Cohousing Solutions, and CoVision Consulting.
An official public kickoff event is scheduled for October 3, 2025, supplemented by Zoom information sessions and site tours in the months leading up to it
